I first used the term “gem geek” when I was working on air as a home shopping host back in 2007 or 2008. I remember my co-host saying that he was a “GG” and that the letters stood for “graduate gemologist.” I responded to him by saying, “Oh, I thought they stood for “gem geek.” Little did I know, those two words would now be used by so many people to describe their love of gemstones.
A popular TV comedy show started airing in 2007 and ran for 12 seasons. The main characters were a group of quirky, socially awkward young scientists. I always loved the geeky t-shirts that they wore on the show. In January of 2016, I was watching the latest episode and thought to myself, “gemology is a science, and I’m just as ‘geeky’ as they are when it comes to gemstones. Why not design some gemology related t-shirts for me?” So, I started sketching some basic designs as they came to me and hired an artist to help me refine them. Once the artwork was finalized, I found a supplier who could print them on shirts and ordered a few samples. Our first two designs were our star characters, Jimmy, and Stella. They are fixtures in our Gem Geek® line of products, and we hope you love them as much as we do!
